Volunteering in school
We welcome volunteers here at Healey, which include a wide range of people with different experiences from those who are completing courses to long-term volunteers and others who start with us as volunteers and go on to progress to a different role, as we support professional development.
Shamim: from volunteer to teaching assistant
"I hadn't been in employment for over 20 years, due to raising my children. I then decided that I wanted to work and a friend of mine suggested that I do a course to become a teaching assistant, and as part of the course I needed to do a placement in a school. That school was Healey.
"When I started my placement at Healey I was excited, but not very confident. I worked two mornings each week, and after a few months a vacancy came up in the school. After much consideration, I decided to apply for the job. It was quite shocking to me that I had managed to find employment after such a long gap in my working life.
"I have been working at Healey School for just over a year now and have learned many new skills. The job is certainly a challenge at times, but very rewarding too."
Chloe: long-term volunteer
"Volunteering at Healey has given me such a sense of purpose. I love the school and the staff are so friendly. The children are great and it has been rewarding to see the young people I have worked with progress to the next stage."
We also welcome ‘Reading Buddies’ and ‘Maths Buddies’ which provide much-needed support to both our young learners and classroom teachers.
All our volunteers are highly valued members of our staff team and make a huge difference to the experiences of everyone at Healey School, especially our young people who benefit greatly from this focussed support.
