Nursery Staff:

  • Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Hussain - Nursery Teachers
  • Miss Overend - Nursery Nurse
  • Miss Hussain - Nursery support assistant

Your child starting Nursery is an exciting time and we are very much looking forward to working in partnership with you and your family to give your child the best possible experience and start to school life.

Nursery Times

Morning Nursery 8.40 – 11.40 (doors open at 11.30)

Afternoon Nursery 12.15 – 3.15 (doors open at 3.00)

Fully Day 8.40 - 3.15 (doors open at 3.00)

It is important that your child attends EVERY DAY. If your child cannot attend then please ring school to report the absence. The legal register is completed at 8.45 and 12.20, when the doors will be locked. If you arrive after this please ring the Nursery bell. If you arrive after the school gates are locked please report to the School Office.

Uniform

Although it is not statutory in Nursery, children look very smart in wearing our school uniform:

  • White polo shirt (children find these much more manageable than shirts)
  • Red jumper or cardigan.
  • Grey trousers or skirt

At Nursery it is most important that children wear warm and comfortable bottoms and weather appropriate shoes that are safe for climbing and running around.  Short sleeves and another layer, or sleeves that can be pulled up easily, are important as children play daily with water, paints and messy sensory play and although aprons are always available they do not cover sleeves. Children have access to outdoor play in all weathers so an appropriate coat, hat, gloves, sun cream should be in school every day.

Toilet Training and Hand Washing

Please help your child to be as independent as possible when using the toilet. We need your help in teaching them to flush the toilet and attempt to wipe themselves. Belts, dungarees and shoelaces are problematic for children to learn to be independent. Elastic waists and Velcro shoes are the easiest for children to manage themselves. Please ensure that your child has a bag of spare clothes, including underwear and socks, in school every day.

Please teach children to wash their hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.

Did you know that soap is most effective when used for the time it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice before rinsing?

Useful Information

We have a class email address, nursery@healeyschool.co.uk . Send us photos of exciting things that you do as a family or achievements. Your children love sharing their news with the class!  During the session children will have a drink and a snack: fruit, crackers, topic related food and things we have baked. We ask parents for a contribution of 50p a week towards the cost.

We have library every week. Please take 5 minutes every day to read with your child, either the library book or their own books. Reading the same book time after time gives children confidence and allows them to become expert story tellers and readers. It’s also a lovely time to share a cuddle!

"The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in life is reading."

The Early Years

“Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.”

The Curriculum

There are three prime areas of learning:

1. Personal, Social & Emotional Development

2. Communication & Language

3. Physical Development

The Prime areas are the building blocks for the rest of your child’s learning where skills can be applied in the four specific areas:

1. Literacy

2. Mathematics

3. Understanding of the World

4. Expressive Arts and Design

The Importance of Learning Through Play

Play experiences will be planned for both indoors and outdoors and spontaneous child led play will also feature greatly, following particular ideas and interests of the children. We provide continuous provision in our Nursery environment so that children become masters of their own play. We add enhancements to areas that provide challenge and interest based on the children’s learning needs and interests that foster deeper learning and achievement of a good level of age related progress.

Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play and by taking part in play which is guided by adults.
